ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s.
Ostrava, 7 April, 2017 – ArcelorMittal Ostrava is investing in the reconstruction of the cooling bed for controlled cooling at the medium section rolling mill. The CZK 80 million contract has been won by its subsidiary, ArcelorMittal Engineering Products Ostrava. With its size and value, the project is one of the biggest contracts realized in the history of the engineering plant. The reconstruction will improve the quality of flat bars for leaf springs, which are used mainly in the automotive industry and freight transport. The Ostrava steelmaker developed the high-added-value product last year and is the only ArcelorMittal Europe´s manufacturer of this product.
"The investment will allow us to supply the market with a larger volume of flat bars for leaf springs, which represents another step in increasing the share of high-added-value products in our portfolio. This will improve our competitiveness," says Vijay Mahadevan, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of ArcelorMittal Ostrava.
Controlled cooling will enable the company to guarantee the maximum hardness of the flat bars according to customers requirements, and it will also allow supplying higher volumes to the market. The production of flat bars for leaf springs, which are used as part of a vehicle suspension system, was launched last year. The introduction of the new product required an investment of more than CZK 210 million in the medium section rolling mill.
"We´ve started producing the components at the beginning of this year and by January next year the new cooling bed will be ready for trials. The project is time consuming because it involves the manufacture of complex engineering units. In addition to that, these must be installed with high precision during two 12-hour stoppages a month that are intended for routine maintenance, not to affect the operation and production of the mill," says Radim Holoubek, commercial and technical representative of ArcelorMittal Engineering Products Ostrava, who significantly contributed to the winning of the contract.
